WE BUILT THIS CITY On Rock & Coal

Bringing scientists and theatre makers to rural locations in coastal Ireland for an interactive event driven by research, comedy, music and what matters most to the community.

POLICY BRIEF

Co-created storytelling combines scientific and local knowledge to facilitate a more complete and hopeful understanding of climate change. Our improvised theatre show that toured coastal and island communities in 2024-25 showed they have valuable ideas for climate action, and that effective policy should include their unique perspectives. RESEARCH

We Built This City on Rock and Coal brings scientists and theatre makers to rural locations in coastal Ireland for an interactive event driven by research, comedy, music and what matters most to the community. Each show is co-created with the audience, using their written answers to prompts about nature and climate change. Improvisation with and for the audience leads to different conversations about the climate crisis, by making space for authentic responses as well as local solutions. This research has been published in two journal articles as well as our brief for policy makers.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Our show format is rooted in forum theatre and is unscripted, to explicitly acknowledge the challenges faced by each audience, make space for emotional responses, and inspire hope for action to make a difference at the individual, community, and global levels.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We Built This City on Rock and Coal brings scientists and theatre-makers to the island of Ireland for a co-created comedy show driven by hopepunk, climate research, music, and what matters most to the local community.

CAOMNHÚ PROJECT

Caomhnú is a storytelling project exploring Irish rural communities’ perspectives on climate change and climate action. It was created after learning from rural community members in the ROAM project.
